Let’s get down to brass tax here, these smoothie bowls are exactly AWESOME! Now that I got that out of the way, I can say hi, so HI! I love having this for lunch, if I’m going home for lunch, or for a post-workout meal. Smoothie Cereal Bowls got everything you need in a good post-workout meal - protein, carb, a little bit of sugar and a whole lotta delicious. Click To Tweet And these could be spun any which way you want. I’ve made a super simple banana and chocolate protein smoothie here, but you could do any smoothie you’d like.
Smoothie Honorable Mentions –
- Chocolate, banana, coffee (just add an instant coffee packet)
- Chocolate, strawberry, banana
- Chocolate and tart cherry juice – yummm!! Tart cherry juice is perfect for post-workout meals or snacks, it helps bring down inflammation in the body and can help muscles recover faster.
- Vanilla and banana
- Vanilla, banana, peanut butter
- Vanilla, pineapple, mango
The possibilities are endless!! And then, you can pretty much choose any type of cereal you’d like. Normally my go-to is Cheerios, but as you can see I tried Chocolate Chex and that was the bomb.com. The extra chocolate on top of the chocolate in the smoothie – um, yeah, I’m totally gettin’ down with that.
Does anyone want to learn a little bit about WHAT your body needs after a workout? I’m assuming you’re raising your hand, since you’re still reading. Your body’s number 1 source of fuel is carbohydrate. I know, mind-blowing, right? True story. So we need carbs and especially need them for our workouts and training. The easiest source of fuel during a workout is glycogen (the storage form of carbohydrate), this is stored in our muscles. Therefore, at the end of our workouts, we’ve used up all of our glycogen stores.
Post-workout we need CARB. Gots to replenish those muscle glycogen stores.
Next, what does protein do in the body? It does a little something called anabolism, fancy word for building or synthesizing. So it helps to rebuild our muscles that, during our workout, we were tearing. Therefore, at the end of our workouts, the protein helps to rebuild the muscle. Post-workout we need PROTEIN.
How do you get you some carb and protein? Man, there’s so many ways and combinations out there. The Smoothie Cereal Bowl is one of them, here’s a couple more ideas:
- Peanut butter and jelly
- Chocolate milk
- Peanut butter and a bagel
- Peanut butter and waffles
- Trail mix – with dried fruit and nuts
- Greek yogurt
- Grapes, cheese and crackers
- Cottage cheese and peaches
- String cheese and an apple
And can we just take a second to recognize that, WHAT THE WHAT?! There’s a video!! Yes, this was my secret, my big thing I was working on last week that needed some extra weekend tweaking. I’m so excited to finally have the tools to start doing videos, because video just really gives such a wonderful opportunity to SHOW how stinkin’ easy it can be to eat healthy.

Currently, Adam and I are trying to hit the gym together – let’s just say our marriage is tested and refined on those days. Trying to navigate the gym together is an interesting task, but I’m starting to have fun with it. 🙂
- 1 frozen banana
- 1 cup skim milk (Almond or another dairy-free option would work well too)
- 1 scoop chocolate protein powder
- 1 cup Cheerios (or another favorite cereal)
- Chop and peel frozen banana.
- Pour all ingredients into blender or blender cup.
- Blend until smooth.
- Pour into cereal bowl.
- Pour cereal overtop.
- Expert tip!! When your bananas are turning brown, chop all of them up and place in a zip-top baggy in the freezer. Make sure to lay them flat in the freezer so they stay somewhat separated and you don't have this big mass of frozen banana that's hard to break apart.
